Recycling Works

Recycling Works

.....More than 160,000,000 tons of residential and commercial garbage is produced in the U.S. annually.  Pennsylvania alone generates over nine million tons per year.  Environmentally sound landfills are shrinking in our State and the cost to construct new ones, under today's guidelines, is in the tons of millions of dollars.   If this becomes necessary, the burden of cost will fall on our shoulders.  Upper Yoder township has been recycling glass, plastic, aluminum, bi-metal and tin cans since September, 1991.  The special container provided for your recyclables remains the property of the Township and must be returned if you move.

The large volume of yard waste has put a strain on valuable landfill space.  Composting is an answer to yard waste disposal; a technique used to accelerate the natural decay process.  Backyard composting not only reduces food waste as well as yard waste but reduces the expense of buying fertilizers for gardens, landscaping and potted plants.  Questions about composting may be addressed the DER regional office or the central office in Harrisburg.
